The Early Life Of Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat. This year, i.e., 2022, marks his 153rd birth anniversary. He studied his primary education in Porbandar and later at Rajkot. He was shy and didn’t like to mix with other children. Every morning he went to school on time and ran back home as soon as school was over. His books were his sole companions, and he spent all his free time alone reading. In his early years, his thoughtful mind was often found with various moral and ethical questions. He married Kasturba Bai when he was in high school at the age of 13. He matriculated from Samaldas college in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, then went to England in 1888 to study law. Though his mother opposed this trip, the opposition was overcome by Gandhi’s strict pledge of not touching any women, wine, and meat in the foreign land. His studies of various religious and introspective works also helped him to develop a unique and independent view of the world, which although at its growing stage, would finally reach adulthood in later years. However, in the early years, there was nothing in Gandhi’s life that would presage the great things that would follow. Gandhi left for his legal studies in London in 1891 and stayed there for two years. Soon after his return to India, Gandhi left for South Africa for a one-year contractual legal job. The incidents there changed his life forever, shaping and strengthening him for the great endeavors he would undertake later in his life.

Mahatma Gandhi And India’s Freedom Movement

Mahatma Gandhi led India’s freedom movement with many other national leaders who opposed British rulers in India. His firm belief in non-violence uplifted many civil rights movements across the world. 

On June 15, 2007, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution that declared October 2 as International Day of Non-Violence. The resolution reaffirms “the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence” and the desire “to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding, and non-violence.”  

Mahatma Gandhi is not only a freedom fighter but also a social and economic revolutionary. His idea of Satyagraha by the method of non-violence is praised and followed worldwide. Gandhi is not a name but an idea that incorporates the feeling of Struggle, Nationalism, and Sacrifice. Gandhi played a crucial role in the freedom struggle of India. He is known for his various Satyagraha to oppose unjust laws made by the British. Some of the popular movements led by Mahatma Gandhi are Champaran Satyagraha for indigo planters, Ahmedabad Mill Satyagraha for an increase in wages of mill workers, Kheda Satyagraha for Patidar peasants, Satyagraha against Rowlatt Act, Salt Satyagraha against the tax imposed on salt and Quit India movement for freedom of India. Hence, we can conclude that the movement led by Mahatma Gandhi played a significant role in the independence of India, and that is why he can be considered the architect of the Indian struggle for freedom.
